Is Netflix Ripping you off?

I had been a very happy Netflix customer for over a year until today when I tried to put my account on hold for a few weeks while we travel north.

We travel quite a bit and before I signed up I looked at their hold policy ... sounded perfect, just like putting your newspaper on hold while you're away. There was a minimum and maximum hold (minimum of about a week and maximum of a few months) but that made sense. I've put our subscription on hold each time we're away for more than a couple of weeks.

Now it turns out they billed me anyway! I just discovered this because I'm about to be on the road for almost two weeks and found my only option was to cancel my account and they would bill me for the next three weeks anyway. Guess my only option is to cancel FOREVER in three weeks ... you might want to consider cancelling your subscription just before your current month is up! Be careful, I've read online that they might keep billing you anyway. Call your credit card company and complain.

It's really a shame they don't have a more customer friendly HOLD policy. Actually they changed it so you can't put your account on hold at all :( I really like getting DVD's by mail. I tried the streaming service, but it didn't work for me. Reasons: Lack of content that we were interested in and sometimes the film would stop while it waited for the download to catch up. Netflix has much more content available by mail on DVD's.

Bottom Line: I still recommend Netflix. Just beware of your monthly anniversary date and put your "subscription on hold" by cancelling before that date. Since I've understood the new policy, I've yet to resume my subscription after cancelling. I'll report back when I do.
